UPPER MUSQUODOBOIT, N.S. - Firefighters spent much of Wednesday trying to put out a stubborn fire at a wood pellet factory in Upper Musquodoboit.

Ten trucks and firefighters from six Halifax fire stations responded to the blaze, as well as firefighters from Upper Stewiacke.

The fire, which broke out at about 10:30 a.m., affected two buildings on the property owned by Enligna Canada, located at the former MacTara lumber mill site.

"They still have some product that appears to be smouldering inside the big hoppers," said Dave Meldrum, spokesman for the Halifax Regional Fire Service.

"They're still working on that. It's not been declared officially under control," he said late in the day.

No one was hurt in the blaze.

Enligna uses sawmill chipping waste and other wood byproducts to make pellets that are used to generate heat and power.

Meldrum said it's more difficult to fight fires that involve flammable, dusty substances.

"Certainly the product itself, for a firefighter, it's a challenge because fire can smoulder."

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
