FIRE officers left their posts unattended during the Christmas break, just 18 months after the Bushfire Royal Commission criticised the state's fire management on Black Saturday.
A Department of Sustainability and Environment email reveals "key incident management team roles for fire response" were not filled over Christmas.
The leaked email blames managers for granting staff leave without checking if vital shifts were covered.
The revelation comes after the Herald Sun revealed DSE had leased 160 Nissan utes as part of its firefighting force without realising they could not carry water tanks and firefighting equipment.
