Well for the last two days we had the smoke house out at our local school. as the new guy i got to go and thought i was gonna be able to get some pics of all the action. i was wrong. i was tossed in and real nervous... but i must admit, after watching my chief run through a group, and my turn was next i was pretty relaxed..i ended up having a blast, even got to see my kids go through it, and knew alot of the kids from hanging out with my boys. it was a rewarding experiance and its just one more thing i now enjoy about the fire service..

but! i did have one issue..

my youngest ones teacher came to me and said he couldnt go in because he forgot his permission slip. i told her its ok im here. she said that it was a matter of responsibility that she wont let him go " he didnt earn it" she said..

well being the kind of guy i am, i had to find out what she ment..she explaind to me how she didnt let her little girl go on a field trip when she forgot something or another and had to teach her a lesson.. i agreed and proceeded to tell her to deny a kid from a safty lesson is far different then a field trip," this is not a privalege" i told her " its a lesson that can save a life, and to deny a child any form of education would make you not much of a teacher!" on that note, i told her my kid is going in and any other that has permission that she thinks "didnt earn it"..

long story short, no one els in her class missed the lesson...

Good Job Karr !!!

Teachers have such a tough job - that is one job I don't think I could do long term - good job showing the teacher the value of safety and life AND education ;-)
One of the things I have noticed in the past couple years is that the schools (at least that I've dealt with) don't really seem to talk about fire safety. Trying to schedule Fire Safety Day with the school is always a pain. It almost seems like they don't want us to come in a teach kids about fire safety. When I scheduled fire safety day this year I was given 1/2 a day for 6 grades and they really just want us to talk about stop, drop and roll.
thats true, must interrupt their lesson plans, and i had one group of kids that on the moment they exited the smoke room they all dropped and started rolling around...lol it was funny!
you only got a half of a day to demonstrate? and for one grade level? wow.. does the school board have any say on these events?
