The smoky fire started after midnight in the 1100 block of East Pine Street.

Police tell Newswatch 16 that at least four homes were damaged by the flames.

People were inside all of the homes at the time, but everyone made it out safely.

Newswatch 16 spoke to a fire victim who said the blaze started in her basement.

"All I heard was the smoke alarm go off. I came downstairs and it was pure black. I couldn't even open the cellar door, it was so hot," said Mildred Vanderpluym.

Authorities have not said how many people are forced out of their homes in Mahanoy City, but the Red Cross is offering support.

Officials have not determined the cause of the fire.
