The thick, black smoke could be seen for miles. It blew across Division Avenue, creating visibility issues and traffic snarls.
But street traffic wasn't the only transportation issue. Train company CSX had to cancel seven freight trains. It will be sometime Tuesday before they will be able to get through.
Larry Koole was around the blaze long enough to provide a play-by-play.
"I have been able to walk around three side of the building, and there is more flames on the south side than on the north side," he said. "Firemen now are breaking out the windows right now."
Despite his wife telling him to stay away, he just couldn't.
"Because I like to watch fire," Koole said.
Some of the talk eventually turned toward politics.
"This is a good example of when you start talking about cutting the fire departments' resources and the police resources," Clint Ryan said. "What would have happened here if we were undermanned? Which I think we probably are anyway, but just look around."
