I am fire photographer, there are lots of us out there, but we are often times lone wolves in our own geographic areas. That being said there are many fire buff/photography clubs, associations or groups you can join including the International Fire Photographers Association http://ifpaweb.ning.com/ the IFPA is also on Facebook.
I am a professional freelance photographer for a number of local papers in NYC, mainly focused on sports photography my gear is almost always in my car. If I am on a operating call for my Dept and can do so without there being a job performance issue I will take photos. I am the Dept Safety Officer and the pics can serve as training aids.
I do only do this for our jobs thou I have no desire to buff jobs for pics in other areas.
i have been shooting fires and emergency scenes since i was about 12 years old. i have had the honor of being published in firehouse a couple of times and a few other mags before going carrear as a FF-even then i still found time to shoot fires. based on the type of photography i shoot which is not fire all the time i like the title Public Safety Photographer
Thank you hoss. I am actually thinking about joinging that next year. It would open the doors to even more networking with other fire photographers.
