Just wondering, what does it cost to take the classes that start you on the path to becoming a firefighter? Is there a seperate fee for the CPAT?

Depends on where you live and what fire department(s) you are applying to.
I have heard as much as 9,000 and as little as 900. That seems like a huge gap.
It can be as low as zero, once again it depends on where you are applying to work.

Work backwards, start with where you want to work and determine what that employer requires.
Nick,
Like Michael said it depends on where you live and what the dept requires. Here at my dept. we pay for all your training once you get hired.
Karl,

You would need to be EMT and FF1 certified before being hired on, wouldnt you?
No, high school grad or equivalent is the requirement in some departments.

Some places in Florida required FLORIDA FFII certification and National Registry EMT/Paramedic.

There are HUNDREDS of different pre-employment requirements.

(At some point you need to indicate what part of the country in which you are seeking employment.)
Michael,

I am in Illinois, Chicago area. I should probably head on into some local FD's and see what their requirements are.
