CRANSTON, R.I. - A Cranston yacht club that's overlooked Narragansett Bay for generations has been destroyed by a fire.


The Edgewood Yacht Club, a wooden building with no sprinklers, was consumed early Wednesday morning. Fire officials are investigating the cause. Several homes near the club were evacuated.

A neighbor tells The Providence Journal that the club, which was founded in 1889, was rebuilt after a 1908 fire.

Bill Plumb, a past commodore of the club, also tells the newspaper that the club will continue even though the building burned down.
