LAWRENCE, Ind.--Firefighters are working to put out hot spots after a fire destroyed a building at a Boy Scout camp in Lawrence Township Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out shortly before 6 a.m. in the cafeteria building at Camp Belzer located in the 6100 block of Boy Scout Road.

Motorists traveling along I-465 called 24-Hour News 8 to report seeing flames shooting above the trees.

Once firefighters arrived on the scene they had a difficult time battling the fire.

“No hydrants what so ever so it is making it very difficult,” said Lawrence Fire Chief David Carlson.

Several tankers from nearby fire departments were called in to help battle the fire.

Scout Executive Scott Clabaugh told 24-Hour News 8’s Adrienne Broadus the building was built five years ago.

“This building was the heart of Camp Belzer. It was the most used building in all of our seven camps. It was used almost every day,” said Clabaugh.

Around 7:30 a.m. 90% of the flames had been contained.

Police have closed Boy Scout Road near the camp site.
