NEW YORK - New York City police say a van full of special needs adults and a fire engine collided, killing one person in the van and injuring several others, two of them seriously.
The Fire Department of New York says its truck was headed to a car fire when it got into an accident on Staten Island with the van.
At least seven people from the van were taken to a hospital, including one critical and one serious injury. The victim who died was in the van and has not been identified.
Six firefighters suffered minor injuries.
Police say the fire engine, from Ladder 81, had its siren on. It hit the van's rear driver-side door as the van made a left turn.

This is just an observation and placing no blame. After reading all of the news stories it appears the (POV) van turned left from a side street in front of the fire truck. A while back the FDNY was looking at the prioritizing responses with secondary units responding at a reduced response. Unless this was a quint, a ladder truck going to a car fire is probably not the priority unit. Then again, in that amount of traffic reduced response is probably not an option either.
