FLORAL PARK, N.Y. - A Long Island man has been killed in a house fire after his father tried to rescue him from a second-floor bedroom.

Police say a firefighter found John Potter lying on the floor of his bedroom at the Floral Park home on Clover Avenue early Sunday morning. After failing to resuscitate the 35-year-old man, emergency responders took him to Winthrop-University Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 7:29 a.m.

Police say his parents were woken up by Potter yelling about a fire. Potter's father, Thomas, tried to climb the stairs to the second floor. But he was pushed back by the smoke and flames.

Potter's parents fled the house and called 911.

Fire marshals are investigating the cause of the blaze.
