LEXINGTON, S.C. - Lexington County officials say a father and his two young sons were killed and six others injured in a house fire near South Congaree.

Coroner Harry Harman said in a news release that the fire was reported just before 6 a.m. Sunday. None of the victims has been identified.

Fire officials told The State of Columbia that the father was 39 years old and the boys were 3 and 4. Autopsies were planned for Monday.

Friends of the family told WIS-TV in Columbia that the father was trying to rescue the boys when he died.

Lexington County assistant fire chief David Fulmer said those injured were treated and released from a local hospital. The American Red Cross is helping the family find a place to stay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
