Fire officials say two people are dead after two-alarm blaze at a Bethesda townhouse.

The victims were a 74-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman. Authorities have yet to confirm their identities or their relationship to each other.

Montgomery County fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says a 55-year-old woman who also lived in the home was awakened by a smoke alarm. He says she unsuccessfully tried to wake the others but was driven out by heat and smoke before she could.

The fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. at a home on Arizona Circle in the wealthy D.C. suburb.

Piringer says the fire quickly went to two alarms, with 60 to 70 firefighters responding. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
