Explorers and the Fire Department.
We have an Fire Explorers post at our Department, (now before i go to far and get yelled at let me say i am for it and do not have an issue with it) My question is, what is the protocal of other departments in them making live calls. IE: Medical, Grass Fires Structure fires Etc:. Should they be allowed to run with you while you are working an active arrest with CPR in progress? Should they be allowed in the fire line of a structure? I am looking for things other departments do to get them active in the service besides washing trucks and cleaning the station. I for one do not think they need to be allowed to run active calls just because of the things we see and have to do. I do not think they should be allowed inside the fire line because of the danger, but i do think they should be able to make fires for ReHab for the Fire Fighters.
I'm Just wondering what kind of response i will get out of this. and remember, i am for it!! i just think there should be limits on what they should see.

Oh, sorry one more opinion. I think, just as an opinion, that if the advisor thinks they're ready for it and they actually want to continue on in the fire service,they should go out with them. Because we are someday going to see it, adn I think we should go see what you guys see to see if we actually want this/can handle it. I know i'm continuing on. Just my opinion.

i am 16 years old and im almost done w/ my recruit class,i am in our volunteer department. im not allowed to be in an interior attack,but i can run code with my fellow firefighters.I deploy hose, fight small dumpster/grass fires,go on EMS calls ect.... i have already done CPR outside of training,i am a pretty active along the response....

yah we have a recruit class with my department,we get trained by our chiefs,we have about 30 people in our class and im the youngest.i cant get my FF1 cuz in my state you have to be 18 to take the test...

Well our department has a explorer program and they are allowed to run grass fires, structure fires. If they run medical calls they are not to touch the patient or go into the house. They are not suppose to run wrecks or car fires. They can fight grass fires but there has to be an adviser on the scene for them to be able to do anything. How do you expect them to learn yes i know that is what training is for but there is nothing like the real thing.

I joined the fire service as a junior when I was sixteen years old and we always joked that we were "glorified hose rollers" because that is about all we were allowed to do besided run tools or change cylinders. Did we want to do more YES but we knew our place and with time and training we would be allowed to do more.
We trained with the regular active fire fighters and did every thing they trained on, but when it came to live fire or wrecks we knew our place and wether it was an officer running the call or the most senior member there we did not do anymore than we normally did no matter what the man/women power situation was. we wait for our mutual aide company to arrive. Our mutaul aide companies are dispatched at the same time we our and we did not need them they are cancelled off.
What the Explorers and Juniors need to realise is that the chiefs and officers have alot to deal with we have to obey the child labor laws on what you are allowed to do and we have federal and state regulations governing what you can and can't do.
I have noticed post on this topic which state I know how to do this or that, thats fine wether you learn it in house or a trade school great but if the regulations we have to follow states you have to be 18 to be certified or do that job. Then guess what we have know choice but to follow it wether there is two or four of you who seen it done or know how to do it if you are not the right age or properly certified then we can not let you do it.
Take your time learn what you can and when you get old enough the job will still be there. You need to understand that us fire fighter that have alot of time in are not dissing you or being hard asses we just have been there and had to wait our turn like you have to wait yours.
Sean is a good guy and he knows what he is talking about and you could learn alot off of him. Wether you want to admit it or not you are still to young to think you know it all or think you are better than the older members. I have been doing this for twenty years and I will be the first to admit I donot know it all.
With time will come experience and maturity just be patient.

The last few posts have been goo. Descriptions from juniors/explorers about their own experiences. Without complaints about the views expressed by more senior firefighters. Very good to see. Sean and I didn't jump on juniors for having opinions. We answered the OP by giving our experience and opinions. Some juniors didn't like that, sad.
Royce? Pay more attention at school. Reading, writing and comprehension. Nobody attacked you, yet you still attacked others.
Kat? Not that it will worry you, but I'm a little dissapointed in your responses here, not what I would have expected.
Juniors and explorers? Pay attention to your instructors and advisors. Abide by the rules of the Department which allows you in. Do as much as you are allowed to do by that Department, but don't attempt to take on more. Keep your passion, it is needed in this job. Good luck.

I am all for the explorer programs, but to a limit. At trainings let the explorer participate but with the vetarans or more experienced (more hands on work), ropes, controled burns, ect. Cause the younger generations are the future for all of us, if they get interested early then they will get more active, and most of the times get their friends or others close to their age group involved. Now the VFD I'm with deals mostly with fire, basic first aid, rescues, and other special team functions, so the medical side may be different.

Thank u guys for answering my questions,my last question is- i dont understand how im 16 and will be a firefighter by ths march. im in my basic firefighter training now frm last Sept to this upcoming march.,with what u guys r saying i just dont understand how i can be a firefighter(maybe it just my departments decision).i mean ive been on so many calls, from fires to cpr's.

Depends on your local rules and State laws. You and the Department have to abide by them.

No- absolutely not. All exposure to trauma of any sort needs to be kept to a minimum or better still, not at all. Juniors don't need to be exposed to that shit! Talk to psychologists and the like about CISM to confirm this.
Should they be allowed in the fire line of a structure?
Again, no way! We're killing adults at an alarming rate- let's not add Juniors to the mix.
I firmly beleive that the only place for a Junior is in the station- training and helping with maintenance. No where else, no exceptions....
