Fire engulfed a mobile home Thursday where a man barricaded himself and fired a gun after sheriff's deputies came to serve an eviction notice.

The fire was suppressed about a half hour later but it was not immediately clear if the man escaped the fire or if others were in the home.

Deputies who approached the house at about 1:40 p.m. heard furniture being moved around inside and then a volley of at least six gunshots, said Ventura County sheriff's Capt. Ross Bonfiglio. He said white smoke started coming out of the vents and flames soon engulfed the house in Lamplighter Mobile Home Park at about 4 p.m.

The deputies evacuated the surrounding area where mobile homes are packed close together, he said.

Bonfiglio would not release the man's name and could not provide details about the man's criminal history.
