We just finished up the last round of winterizing hydrants. Do those of you who are in hydranted areas (dry hydrant), winterize your hydrants yearly? We have a lot of hydrants we have to manually pump because they hold water. It is a great way for new guys to learn the streets and the hydrant locations.

Yes thank you Joe that is exactly what we do. On the route we had this year we had I think 9 troublesome hydrants. 7 of those were marked as not draining well so we kinda knew they might be trouble. As you stated I think all of those hydrants had 1973 or older dates on them so, yeah kinda old. Each of out companies has about 100 or so hydrants so that we get the whole city covered in about 2-3 months. It is actually one of my favorite things to do. I like getting out and walking the route and meeting the people that we see. Making a presence I guess. That and inspections.
We used to inspect hydrants yearly. No snow here. Usually just a quick open and close to make sure there was still water flowing. Making sure they weren't overgrown, etc . But the water district does all of that now. One of the probie tests used to be a blank map that needed to be filled in with street name and hydrant location. They don't do that anymore. But it was a great way to get out of the station for an afternoon. Wish we still did that.

Santa Barbara, CA (where I work) sometimes has a blanket of snow but it is very rare and usually only in the mountains... Our hydrants are wet barrel for the most part, with some exceptions in the non-urbanized areas with old hydrants, but even these are not winterized. It can get into the teens and two years ago it stayed cold long enough for fire sprinkler pipes to burst. But this is considered a rare occurrence.

Santa Barbara Coastline... Not much snow here... : )

Ok... so maybe we don't have snow... but you know what we get to deal with that you don't?
