Hello,
I've joined this hoping for some advice in international jobs. I'm currently an EMT-B student in Portland Oregon USA and I'm interested in migrating to Australia to persue a career firefighter position. I had a few questions. Does Australia recognize EMT-basic at any level of fire brigade career?
I know I have to establish permanent residency first, and I don't want to lose US residency. Has anyone else experienced this?
Do Australian fire departments have an option to live at the station, like here in the US?
Anyone have any tips? Or can describe the recruitment process (particularly in Melbourne, but I'm flexible). Thank you for any and all help!!

When you achieve permanent residency in Australia, you will technically no longer be residing in the US. But do not confuse residency with citizenship. If you are a US citizen, you always will be regardless of where you live. Once in Australia, for US tax purposes you will not be resident in the US anymore and will not have to pay US taxes (but you are still a US citizen). Does that make sense?
I'm in the US now but am from Melbourne originally. As you are probably aware, there are three firefighting agencies in the state of Victoria. MFB (100% career, covers metropolitan Melb), CFA (combination, covers all privately owned land in the state) and DSE (100% paid, covers national parks and forrests). There are no live in stations anywhere that I am aware of. It's possible that a few CFA stations might have live-ins, but MFB and DSE definitely not.
All Australian fire brigades are run at basically a state level. It's very different to the US, where things are run at local or county levels. Check out these websites for the Victorian fire agencies. www.mfb.vic.gov.au www.cfa.vic.gov.au www.dse.vic.gov.au
Can't shed any light on your emt question, but I can tell you that you with that you will have more medical qualifications than 99% of firefighters in the state. Fire and ambulance services (EMS) are completely separate.
Ahh yes.. I've looked at the skilled migration visa. I don't think there is anything on the SOL list that is going to help me out with that one. Are there any fire academies or fire science courses available in Melbourne that you know of? Maybe I can get there on a student visa? Is there any other way to try for permanent residency besides the skilled migration?

RMIT and Swinburne University offer Associate Diplomas in Fire Sience I believe (=2 yr degree). Check out their international student info. They are both very good institutions. However, a student visa will not give you permanent residency, which you need before applying to any of the services for a career position. You could volunteer with the CFA if you live in a CFA area (anywhere in the state except inner Melbourne).
Your only other option is to marry an aussie and use a family visa. Sorry, can't help you there either since I already married an American girl, but, my brother in Melbourne is single... :)
hahaha! Well I figure if I'm there for two years on a student visa and complete the course work I might be able to apply for permanent residency (hopefully) after. If not I'll figure something out. Thank you for the school info!
