OK, so I'm getting my emt-b and ff1 next year. I am doing it through a program called Youth Options which pays for me to go get these. BUT now I am hearing that I cant get my license for my emt-b until I am 18? (I live in WI) Is this true or is there somethign I can do differently to get my license? And do i have to be 18 to get my ff1 license? And if not, I'll get that next year, what does that qualify me to do? Will I be able to do anything with the fire department? I hope so! I'm an explorer now and I luv it, cant wait to actually get going. So I'm hoping there is some way i can get my emt-b license next year and do someting with the fire department. Either way I'm going through the emt-b class because it will help me later. Thankyou!!!

Here in New York you have to be 18yo to get your NYSEMT license. As far as FF1 goes, you get a certificate thru OFPC after course completion.
Ok..but what are you allowed to do after you get ur certificate for FF1?? Thankyou
Yes Bear yuo are right...here in NY it is 18 years old for both.....I would advise you to contact your State Dept of Health for the specifics in your State though as each varies....you can check with your local department or State Fire to see what goes for Fire1....Good luck.........Paul
Ok...Thankyou
Most Departments require you to be 18 y/o to respond to calls for legal reasons. Your Department will have to make that decision. A volunteer department may allow you to go on calls before 18, again, depending on the Department.
ok I hope I can though...I'll do ANYTHING with the department too...I'm primarily goin for firefighting but i'm getting my paramedic too,to have it...But next year, I dont care if i'm cleanin the whole time, I want to get out of my current job and do anything with the firedepartment...So i'm hoping for the best and thankyou.. stay safe and have some fun :)
I can tell you that here in Colorado, you have to be 18 to get both the EMT and FF1 certificates. You also have to be 18 to even respond on any Fire Department equiptment. If you have any volunteer agencies around you may check with them. Im not sure but but I believe the certificates are the same as far as age is concerned no matter what state you are in. If you are going for your EMT certificate I would go and get your National Registry EMT cert.
Here in Iowa you have to be 18 to get your EMT as far as firefighter 1 goes technically I have never seen an age limit but to meet the criteria for your certification you have to have an interior fire attack signed off by the chief and you can not do interior attack until you are 18.
Same here in Michigan............ 18 y/o.
Ok. :( Um, what is the National Registry EMT cert
In WI you have to be 18 by the time you finish your emt-b course.
in NC its 18 for EMT also
