BOSTON - Smoldering wires in an electrical room inside a Boston condominium building has produced a lot of smoke, forcing firefighters to evacuate the 24-story structure and switch off power in an effort to put down the fire.
Department spokesman Steve MacDonald says the fire in an electrical panel on the 12th floor was reported at about 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
Firefighters helped evacuate the floors above the 12th in the 220-unit Whittier Place building. They also shut down power to the panel, a move that eventually killed the smoldering fire.
The power outage affected people on lower floors and firefighters eventually evacuated the entire building. It was not immediately clear how many people were evacuated.
MacDonald says there were no flames, just smoke, and no injuries were reported. There was no immediate word on what caused the fire.
