FRANKLIN, Wis. - Investigators say an elderly man who fought to keep the home in which he was raised has died in a fire at the suburban Milwaukee farmhouse.

Authorities believe a body found in the burned debris is that of 76-year-old Gerald Mahr.

The state fire marshal is assisting in the investigation into the cause of Sunday's fire.

The Journal Sentinel featured Mahr in a 2005 story about a developer's interest in his property and the city's plans to rezone it without his consent. The newspaper reports the home had broken windows and no heat and that Mahr often used space heaters to keep warm.
