LEXINGTON, Va. - Nearly 30 Washington and Lee University students were injured when a deck collapsed at an off-campus house.

Rockbridge County Emergency Management Coordinator Robert Foresman says rescue crews got a call around 11:20 p.m. Friday about the collapse of the wooden deck, which was about 10 feet high.

Foresman said eight people were taken to the hospital. At least 14 others went to the hospital on their own. Several other students were treated at the university's health center.

University spokesman Jeff Hanna says none were seriously injured. All were treated and released except one, who was scheduled to have surgery Saturday on a compound ankle fracture.

The collapse happened in an area of two-story "pole houses" along the Maury River in Lexington.
