DETROIT (AP) -- A Detroit fire official and neighbors have rescued a family of four from a burning house on the city's east side.

The Detroit Free Press reports Fire Inspector Robert Murray was on his way into work Wednesday morning when he spotted flames.

Murray, who has more than 20 years on the job, helped neighbors hoist a ladder to a second-floor window so two teenage girls and their parents could escape.

Fire Capt. Steve Varnas says all four suffered smoke inhalation and the parents are in critical condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Varnas says the fire may have been started by an electrical problem.
