WASHINGTON, D.C. - Police are investigating why the driver of a UPS truck seemingly lost control of the vehicle Monday evening, and crashed into a first floor window of the Hirshorn Museum on Independence Avenue.
The accident happened at 8:34PM and did minor damage to the museum building. The driver was hospitalized with what are described as serious, but not life-threatening, injuries, leading to speculation he may have suffered some medical problem immediately prior to the apparent accident.
Police closed parts of Seventh Street and Independence Avenue while a bomb squad searched the truck for explosives, a precaution at a time of vehicle bombs used in terrorist attacks. There was no indication terrorism played a role in Monday's event.
Museum officials told 9NEWS NOW that damage to the building was minor, and said they expected the Hirshorn would be open to the public Tuesday.
