There's a massive story unfolding here in Victoria (Australia) around claims that for many years, the CFA, at their fire training complex in Fiskville, used a range of nasty chemicals for live burn training.

There's claims that as many as 13 instructors and firefighters have died from tumours, etc related to the chemicals. It's expected that the numbers will increase.

This story has made front page news so it's getting some good coverage for those concerned.

There's been some backlash from the fact that Brian Potter was a Chief Officer for a number of years, and some are questioning what he did in his role, if he suspected there were issues....

The toll is now at 15 confirmed deceased, and more suffering effects from repeated exposure....

Sad to see that your part of the world is going through this learning curve... There is good and bad news here brother. For those exposed in the 70's and 80's, it's been too long to really do much to help them out. Long term exposure to cancer causing agents and materials once things get going, are difficult to stop and require chemotherapy, etc. Generally speaking, it takes decades for cancers to present themselves but dependent on you genetics, that time frame can be significantly sped up or altered.

The good news for some is that there actually is a way to get rid of toxic chemicals that typically settle into your fat / adipose tissues / cells. Check this out and shorten your learning curve. We've been there and done that already. No sense reinventing the wheel Lutan.

Mike, I wish more people would read the original links I posted as it clearly highlights the dangers we deal with everyday. For the clowns who refuse to wear SCBA and other respiratory protection, this is the end result of repeated exposure. Nasty stuff!

Sometimes, if you play... you pay, especially when you don't come dressed for the party.

My understanding wasn't that people weren't wearing PPE/SCBA but rather, were exposed either through contact from contamination of the PPE or, people that worked on site or lived near by and were exposed to the plume of contaminants.

Most interestingly, the denials sound a lot like those made in reference to 9/11 cancers.

Jack you're right in your understanding, however my point is that too many deny that they're being exposed to nasties in our day-to-day operations and are exposing themselves too all sorts of shit.

This case (and I'm sure countless others), including 9/11 highlight that we can't get complacent and must fully understand what we're dealing with, what we're being exposed to, and what measures we need to take to protect oursleves.

Hindsight is amazing.....

lutan,

I agree, people sometimes just can't wait to whip off their mask, even while the structure is still smoking/off-gassing.

WOW - how sad...

Glad to see you post so much information on such an important matter - for far too long firefighter self-care has been put on the back burner, I appreciate light being brought to this matter, snce many people I love are firefighters... and regularly put themselves in harms way around "hidden" dangers

So very very very important that firefighters pay close attention to how their work environment AND training envionrment is affecting their health !!!  And firefighters must work harder to protect their colleagues and remind the firefighters around them to stay safe as well so we can reduce the injuries and deaths to firefighters.... since no one wants to die for their community service...

So in more developments:

Country Fire Authority did nothing about risks at Fiskville

A SECRET report has revealed the Country Fire Authority knew about dangerous chemicals stored at its main training centre more than 20 years ago but did not warn workers of any health dangers.

KNEW ABOUT DANGER - AND - DID NOT WARN

Perfect grounds to get sued...  so sad... total disregard for the life and safety !!!
