STAMFORD -- Firefighters put out a blaze in the garage beneath a condominium complex Tuesday morning that forced the evacuation of 15 units at the Forest Mews development on Highland Road shortly before 8 a.m.

The fire was reported by a tenant after she smelled smoke in her bathroom, Deputy Fire Chief Tim Conroy said.

Firefighters located the fire in the ceiling panels of the above-ground garage, and used hoses to put it out by 8:15 a.m., Conroy said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the blaze appears to have originated near an electrical meter box for the units above, Conroy said.

Connecticut Light & Power cut electricity to the building, Conroy said, and whether the tenants can return to the units tonight depends on when power can be safely restored.
