I am Training Officer for my department. I "fell" into the position after being on the department for only 1 &1/2 years. I take the job very seriously and firmly believe one can never have to much training. I feel I do not get the respect that I should from the senior officers and men on the department. I have talked to my chief and he feels that I should turn over the position to someone else so they get a taste of what it is like to have put in the work I put in and go through what I go through. To me that would be punishing me for doing my job and he has told me I am doing a good job. I think an officers meeting should be held to get this issue settled. So I am open for suggestions and any advice.
I am a past officer that currently serves as a Deputy Training Officer as well as a Firefighter, it can be done. However why your department chose someone with so little time in to be the training officer is beyond me. Frankly it sounds like a cop out to me. Your Chief could have appointed anyone to the position, but for whatever reason picked you. Now he says give it up to someone else, but tells you you are doing a good job. Way too many mixed messages there. Trust me, if the officers are against you, no amount of meetings will fix that.
Don't give up. Yes, you don't have much time in to be a training officer, but a meeting isn't going to make things better, just going to make them resent you. If you are doing a good job then keep doing it and earn their respect.
