As professional firefighters, what are your thoughts, comment and concerns when it comes to these groups?

Is I am personally aware, all three of these groups interact with the FD in many different ways, and with that being said, here comes an additional question.  How (if at all) have you interacted with your area volunteer members?

We are fortunate to have an active CERT team in one county we serve.

They come to large incidents with lights, assistance for our rehab, food, a warming trailer on cold days and cooling fans on hot days. We are grateful for their assistance. They are on the ball and well equipped.

As with any volunteer group, the quality of the team is dependent upon their leadership. Our local CERT team is led by a dedicated and brilliant woman who also happens to be mayor of a nearby town.

We have not had any interaction with Citizen Corps or Fire Corps.

I have personally worked with AmeriCorps hand crews on wildfires. They are well-organized and well-trained. The crew boss and his assistant were adults while the firefighters were "troubled teens." Believe me they worked hard because they wanted to be there.

Ey that's great to hear,  Is the CERT you're speaking of a county team or a city/town based group?

The local CERT organizations are all county teams. They get support from county fire marshals and emergency managers. Apparently they are getting grant money from some state agency or maybe DHS/FEMA because they have lots of toys. Only guessing.

Ya, the county guys get all the cool stuff :P
