Heyy everyone. I'm a newbie here and to the Fire/EMS world. I am 19, a level I FF/EMT-B and just got hired on the Clayton Fire Dept. here in Dayton, Ohio. I am currently taking my Level II class and love it! I plan on starting medics in the spring. I was raised in a fire house seeing as my Dad was a Captain/Fire Marshal/Fire Inspector. While all the other girls played with barbies, I played on fire trucks. I am small at a whopping 5'1''. I manage though! I am excited to get into the Fire/EMS world and any tips/pointers would be appreciated!!!

Welcome to the addiction. :)
Welcome and be safe!!
Listen to every word the old farts tell you. They did not get to be old farts screwing up every thing they touch. Of course some old farts you need to use selective hearing on (aka aw you don't need an air pack or something else crazy like that). Take every advantage of every chance you get to train (At SCC, Clayton, Englewood, Ohio Fire Academy, Greene County Fire School, State Fire School, ect). You can never get too much training especially if your department has low numbers of certain calls, train more in that area. If you are Dayton and go out on a working structure almost once a shift, you are probably pretty good on this where as if you are Clayton or Englewood or Union you might need to refresh your knowledge a little more often (well maybe not Clayton thanks to Trotwood and Harrison burning stuff all the time, but you see the point).
welcome
Actually I should clarify old farts for you and other local folks I mean folks like Tarter & Swick at SCC and others in the area like them. As I eluded to there are some old farts that are just full of hot air sometimes.
Haha Tarter and Swick are crazy awesome old farts though! haha. I am trying to take advantage of everything I can. Yeah I got hired Paid-on-call at Clayton and they said I will most likely see fires)which is A-OK with me!), due to them sending an engine and a ladder on every fire, and a decent amount of their runs are mutual aid for Harrison and Trotwood. My other teacher, Chief Temple, was a battalion chief for Trotwood so Ive heard the stories from Trotwood haha.
Welcome I'm in South Dayton, Washington Twp Fire
welcome aboard . learn something new everyday and be safe.
Well I got onto a fire dept. but have to take the drug test before I can officially start. I am just super nervous. I am trying to take all the extracurricular things that I can. I know I can do whatever I put my mind to. I hope I can just convince the old timers that I want them to teach me how to do things.
Welcome Aboard:)
If you pay attention and don't act like a know it all you should have no problem. You got some guys at Clayton that know a bunch too. Just watch out for egos.
Welcome to You Julie and Congratulations on getting hired in the Claytonn Fire Dept.Stay Safe. Hughie The 57 House
