BALTIMORE - Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski says the children of a fire cadet who died in a training exercise in Baltimore in 2007 will get more than $300,000 in survivor benefits.
Mikulski said Friday that the U.S. Department of Justice found that the survivors of Baltimore Fire Department Cadet Racheal Wilson are eligible to receive Public Safety Officer Benefits.
Federal officials denied benefits for Wilson's children in 2009, saying city fire officials did not submit required paperwork.
In December Mikulski asked U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to intervene.
Wilson died in a live burn training exercise in February 2007 after becoming trapped in a West Baltimore rowhouse that her instructors set on fire. Baltimore stopped using vacant rowhouses for training following her death.
