Chicago South Side Apartment Fire Kills Three Children

CHICAGO — Three children are dead after a fast-moving fire at a home on Chicago's South Side.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out early Thursday in a back bedroom of the Englewood home.

All three children were found trapped at the back of the home. They were ages 2, 4 and 9.

Stacey Austin, the children's father, says he tried to rescue them, but it was too late. He and other tenants say the fire was moving too quickly.

Austin, his wife and their seven other children made it out of the home safely, as did tenants on the second floor.

Two Chicago police officers were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Austin says his children may have been playing with a lighter before the fire. The cause is still under investigation.
