We had a flood rescue back in early September. We were the first due boat to a location about an hour away in rush hour traffic and torrential downpours.
Once we were finally able to make it to the scene we had to rescue 5 victims that had became stranded in the trees after rapidly rising flood waters completely submerged their cars along what was normally a highway. Due to the direction and speed of the current we had to ferry the boat backwards at an angle into the trees so we didn't get pushed into them as well.
Two of the victims were located along the tree line behind a telephone pole that was surrounded by guide wires on either side, as well as multiple road signs, with a narrow break in the trees making navigating backwards an interesting challenge. The first two were taken back to the shallower area out of the current and left with EMS while we went back out for the next two. At this point the second boat had arrived and went out for the 5th victim.
All crews and victims made it back safely to shore with no injuries reported. Crews remained on scene for a few hours longer since apparatus and numerous cars had become stranded in the intersection(the only remaining dry land) as it was determined it was the safest location.
It was a unique situation since we responded so far into a neighboring jurisdiction and were able to make it in time to rescue everyone, despite the fact they were already in the trees and the water was rising at the time of dispatch. It was also the first boat based rescue with our new boat.
