CAR FIRE QUESTION?

I've been flipping through utube videos all night, and i am amazed at how many times departments can be seen at a car fire and not using full structural ppe, to include scba. My question is are there really that many departments tha dont require this? Full ppe should be required to be worn at any car fire, do these people just want to die young? everyones thoughts

its a combination of many things. Laziness, complacancy the "its not going to happen to me" syndrome. It all boils down to we are grown adults. If you take the chance, dont bitch or whine if something goes wrong.

Accuracy can be an issue at times.Gun the car and it rolls.Then it akes a little longer.

It is in my fire dept standard operation guidlines that all PPE is to be worn at all carfires including SCBA! Who in the right mind would not want to wear full PPE??? I sure as hell would want full PPE on me that is for sure.

Dave, you are correct, and your statement does indeed apply to Los Angeles Firefighters. If one is in an IDLH atmosphere, the phrase "no SCBA" does not typically equate to "full PPE".

I totally Agree with you on this one I think that full PPE should be worn our department requires it. as well as common sence will tell you work smarter not harder.

a alternative to wildland gear is denim jeans with no holes good boots with stiched on sole with leather laces and cotton long sleeve shirt hard hat and gloves that is what the state of PA will allow and still cover you under insurance that way your not killing your TOG butthen again this is what PA allows lol

We wear our full PPE to all fires/automatic alrms/CO calls. We just dont use them for brush fires

I really hope you're kidding...You dont know whats in the smoke especislly today with the new cars and the materials I wor they use. As for the seatbelts...I hope everyone uses them. I work in an ER and I see the end results of people not using them.

Hear in England its full ppe including flash hood and BA ( breathing apparatus). NO exeptions. Toxic gas is just the obvious,what about spring loaded bumpers, LPG convertions,exploding tyres and glass etc ?. If you get hurt without your ppe, then its your ass on the line. We allways attack car fires defensively with a 45mm jet to begin with,to knock it down, then investigate for LPG, or anything that may be in the car, before going in close to finish the job ( unless its spreading to someones house,then you just have to do what you can as quickly as possible. )

Hmmm, good point. Maybe the problem is you're just getting there to fast. We've found once one of the tires let go, problem solved. No problem that can't be solved with a little pre-planning.
