A Houston firefighter was injured while battling an early morning blaze at a southwest Houston apartment complex that apparently was sparked by a vehicle parked beneath the complex, a Houston Fire Department spokesman said.

Firefighters responded to the Woodchase Apartments at South Gessner and High Meadow about 3 a.m. to confront a fire that quickly spread to other units, HFD spokesman Pat Trahan said. At least four buildings and at least 20 units were destroyed, he said.

Firefighters were hampered by winds that fanned the flames, and tight spaces between the buildings that made it difficult to get in hoses, Trahan said. The fire quickly spread to four alarms, bringing a total of 250 firefighters to the scene.

"The dry weather conditions, along with a large complex and tight spaces to work in, prompted us to push more manpower to the fire," Trahan said.

The fire apparently began on the west side of the building, where several cars were parked beneath some apartment units, officials said.

HFD arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, Trahan said.

A firefighter was transported to an area hospital for treatment of an injury to his shoulder.

The fire was under control about 4:45 a.m.
