WINNIPEG - Police are trying to determine why a man was lying on a Winnipeg street before he was struck and killed by a fire truck on an emergency call.
The truck's emergency lights and siren were operating when the accident happened early Sunday morning.
Investigators say that just before the collision, a car in front of the truck pulled over to allow firefighters to pass and it was then the truck's driver saw something on the dark, wet roadway.
The driver tried to brake, but it wasn't until after the impact that firefighters realized they had hit someone.
Const. Robert Carver, a police spokesman, says the man was alive before the collision but suffered traumatic injuries.
The man's name has not been released and counselling is being provided to the fire truck's crew members. (Winnipeg Free Press)
