The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Pinnacle Security of Utah and its subcontractor, Security Associates International of Illinois, will pay Carolyn Desmond a combined $4.6 million.

Desmond's 2008 suit blamed the companies for the death of her husband Scott, who died of smoke inhalation.

The lawsuit claims a Security Associates employee reported the fire to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District using a non-emergency line, causing a delayed response to the blaze.

The home's two residents also were killed, along with another Contra Costa County firefighter.
