WILLOW CREEK, Calif. (AP) -- A U.S. Forest Service firefighter has been killed in a fall from a helicopter during a training exercise.
Authorities say the 20-year-old firefighter fell while training to rappel from a helicopter during an exercise Tuesday morning in Humboldt County.
Forest Service spokeswoman Robin Cole says the firefighter was part of a crew doing weekly training while assigned to a fire burning in the Trinity Alps.
The name of the firefighter has not been released.

During a routine training exercise, an individual was involved in an accident. A helicopter and its crew, who are assigned to the Backbone Fire, were conducting weekly skill proficiency acceptance training and were involved in an accident that took an individual's life. At 10:10 a.m. today, while performing proficiency skill acceptance training at the Backbone Helibase in Willow Creek, Calif., an individual fell and incurred fatal injuries. The training is required to be conducted weekly to insure the crew's safety and proficiency. The individual was provided medical attention immediately at the scene. The helibase medical staff, the Humboldt County Coroner's Office, and the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office were dispatched and involved in the initial response. An accident investigation team has been ordered and assigned. Critical stress debriefings are occurring at this time for all those involved.
