California Firefighter Falls Through Floor, Rescues Boy In Apartment Fire

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach police say the mother of a toddler rescued from a burning apartment building has been arrested for allegedly leaving him unattended for several hours.

Investigators say it appears the early Monday fire was started by an electrical problem in the kitchen and it caused about $100,000 in damage.

Firefighters told City News Service the 2-year-old boy was in critical but stable condition and showing signs of improvement.

Fire Capt. Rich Brandt says a firefighter searching for the boy fell through the floor up to his elbows but pulled himself up and found the child.

Police say 31-year-old Patience Aruomah was booked several hours after the fire was extinguished on suspicion of felony child abuse.
