California Firefighter Seriously Injured in RV Fire, Explosion

OAKLAND, Calif. — An explosion has seriously injured an Oakland firefighter battling a motorhome fire.

Battalion Chief Melinda Drayton says the firefighter, whose name hasn't been released, is in serious but stable condition after surgery for what she calls severe facial trauma.

The San Francisco Chronicle says the explosion occurred Wednesday afternoon while firefighters were extinguishing a motor home blaze that started in the vehicle's engine compartment.

Drayton says the injured firefighter was attacking the blaze outside the motor home when the explosion occurred. No one else was hurt.

This will be interesting to read about when they release the findings as to whether the firefighter was wearing a SCBA / Hood combo to prevent burns and whether the face piece failed from the explosion. Very scary.
