HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters are dousing hot spots and guarding against flareups in the wake of a fire that destroyed an Orange County beachfront home and damaged two others.

About 15 firefighters remain on the scene of the gutted home at Sunset Beach Friday morning. County Fire Authority spokesman Greg McKeown says they're waiting for a building inspector to declare the ruin stable enough for them to go inside and mop up hot embers.

McKeown says there were some flareups overnight.

Investigators believe embers from an overturned charcoal grill sparked the blaze Thursday.

McKeown says a firefighter who slipped and fell was treated for a rib injury and two civilians were treated for smoke inhalation.

That land is extremely valuable. As a result, they've allowed setbacks that are almost non-existent. How do you protect an exposure when it looks like there's less than 3' between structures?
I'm a volunteer firefighter in a rural, forested district, where zoning requires 35 acres to obtain a building permit. You could say I'm at the other end of that spectrum from beachfront property. In our case, we want defensible space between the trees and the structures. The issues are actually similar. If one burning house starts the forest burning, it will threaten downwind neighbors' houses. In both cases, protecting exposures is critical.
All of the coastal areas property values are high. Zoning in places like this (Oakland Hills) allow homes to be built right next to one another. I don't think this is very rare considering all large city fire departments have to deal with the same issue of over crowding and using every square inch of land.

The problem is that we don't learn from our mistakes. It's also what keeps us employed...

my concern is firefighters standing just feet from the collapsing building... scary
