I am President of the California Cadet Academy located in the Napa Valley and we are trying to get the word out to all Fire Departments.  As a female Reserve Firefighter, I especially want to reach out to all the young women out there who may feel discouraged about "making" it in the Fire field.  We also are trying to reach out to the underpriveleged.

Basic info about us:

The California Cadet Academy is a residential summer camp for high-school aged students who are interested in becoming Firefighters, Police officers and Emergency Medical Technicians. Cadets who attend the Academy are trained in fire science, law enforcement and basic first aid (CPR certificate issued). The cadets are exposed to interactive scenarios that allow them to safely experience what Firefighters, Police Officers and Emergency Medical Technicians do on a daily basis.

Our Program is designed to motivate an interest in education and develop vocational skills as a guide to the future. The Academy is a paramilitary environment with a high level of discipline. Cadets wear uniforms, follow a strict Code of Conduct and become part of a team.

The CCA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) Public Benefit Educational Corporation. The organization was established to provide high school aged students the opportunity to experience what it would be like to become a Firefighter, Law Enforcement Officer or Emergency Medical Technician.

In recent years, several school boards throughout the country have reduced and/or eliminated high school vocational training programs that were traditionally offered as an alternative to college.

The CCA strives to promote an emphasis in education as well as provide basic vocational training. The program is designed to give the students who attend a head start when applying to college and/or attending certification programs to become Firefighters, Police officers, Deputy Sheriffs, Park Rangers, Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians.

Our program is intended to mentor the students and assist them in evaluating their options for the future. We stress higher education and devote approximately 50% of camp time in the classroom. Our goal is to expose the students to the many facets of a public service career in a controlled, safe, and fun setting.

Many people are not aware of the hurdles that must be overcome before becoming a Firefighter, Law Enforcement Officer or Emergency Medical Technician. Our weeklong camps not only prepare the students for these careers, but also offer an experience that helps prepare them for the hurdles they may face in any profession.
