WASHINGTON (WUSA) - Almost two weeks ago, five DC firefighters were rushed to the hospital after a roof collapsed on them. They were trying to make sure everyone was out of the fully engulfed home.

The radio transmissions were dire: injured firefighters and then a May Day call, indicating a missing firefighter. He was found safe outside, but inside the small house five firefighters were almost trapped in under five minutes.

The five injured firefighters were treated at the Washington Hospital Centers Burn Unit. Their doctor says the severity of the injuries varied on their proximity to the flames.

Dr. Marion Jordan said, "There was a progression of more and more burned surfaces and more and more burned depth as they came out of the room."

All five patients are on their way to a full recovery and want to return to duty.

Firefighter Warren Mike Deavers said, "We love what we do I know I wouldn't want to anything else..."

But even the four released from the hospital cannot return to duty until their skin fully heal.

DC Fire officials say there are two investigations. One will focus on the cause of the blaze while the the other will look at the response to the fire and determine what lessons, if any, can be learned from ablaze that could have been deadly if not for the training and courage of those involved.

Firefighter Charles Ryan remains in ICU but he sent a note of thanks to all of those who have expressed their well wishes and helped his family cope during this difficult time.
