Hey all fellow lovers of the fire service!

I simply cannot belive the amount of grass fires we had this past weekend. Just wonder what our politicians think about having burn bans yet having the availability of tons of roadside firwework stands? Perhaps if they had to ride along and see what we do they would take this a bit more seriously. I am all for seeing the beautiful firework displays-but in a controlled environment with professional people in the know. Kids have no idea about the seriousnes of what these little timebombs can do. We had one call where we had to wet down an entire fence line of about a mile before the fire got into their backyards. Lots of work-no complaints here because I love the fire service-but some of these situations can turn deadly and there is such a waste of property. Are there any laws to prevent these firework stands from being put up and opened during the burn bans? Just wondering??? Happy New Year all and be safe!

LOL...in a controlled environment with people in the know? That would have to be in a laboratory setting because I've seen many many "professional" firework displays go really wrong. We had one display 4th of July 2009 right here that nearly set a brand new mobile home on fire. And by brand new I mean it was still on the trailer lot! I'm not at all for banning fireworks on a permanent basis because I love to set off some from time to time. I only wish people would take 5 minutes and think about what they are doing before they set them off.
Job security! Just a little sarcasm off the top. We also have very dry conditions this time of year. Most of the time fireworks are sold without restriction, but a couple of years ago our county commissioners added a fireworks ban on top of a burn ban. You would have thought it was the end of the world! The fireworks dealers sued the county, but lost. The fireworks lobby seems to be pretty strong in the state legislature. They'll be around for a while longer.... until a politician's family member or home is burned in a fireworks-caused fire. Then we'll see some action.
