Early Tuesday morning, both firefighters were evaluated and released from the hospital.

Flames erupted inside a vacant home on Buffalo's west side at about 1:30 a.m Tuesday.

When firefighters arrived, the fire already spread to both floors of the 7th Street home.

They began to fight the blaze but the battle quickly took a frightening turn.

Two firefighters fell about 10 to 20 feet as they climbed down a ladder.

"I don't know the extent of their injuries yet. We transported both of them to ECMC. They were both talking when they left. It's hard to say how badly they were hurt, "said Division Chief Scott Barry, of the Buffalo Fire Department.

Flames began to spread to two nearby vacant homes.

With the crew already down two firefighters , the division chief decided to call for a second alarm.

Barry said, "What we had, on the surface of it, looks like a very suspicious fire."
