A group of friends embarked on a 26,000-mile mission around the world in a fire engine yesterday to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, The Fire Fighters Charity and The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

The Follow That Fire Engine charity mission is dedicated to the memory of Garth Moore, who died last year after a brave battle with lung cancer.

Mr Moore was a firefighter at Wimborne Fire Station in Dorset and dedicated his life to fighting fires and saving the lives of others over the course of his 33 years in service.

His son Steve is the expedition leader.

The mission which left the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, south-east London, yesterday also hopes to achieve Guinness World Record status for the longest continuous trip in a fire engine.

Supporters can keep track on the crew's progress at www.followthatfireengine.com.
