Brakes Fail on Wildland Plane During Landing
DENVER - The pilot of a firefighting plane that ran off a runway says its hydraulic system and emergency brake system failed.
No one was injured when the Lockheed P2V-5 crashed through a fence at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport outside Denver on June 26. The plane's nose was damaged.
The hydraulics power the brakes. A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board says the pilot reported the hydraulics failed after the plane dropped retardant on a wildfire in northern Colorado.
The NTSB says the pilot prepared to use the emergency hydraulic system for braking, but that didn't work either.
The plane is owned by Neptune Aviation Services of Missoula, Mont. Company officials didn't immediately return a call.
