A fleet safety manager hired by the Boston Fire Department in the aftermath of a fatal fire truck accident has been dismissed after less than two weeks on the job.

Fire Commissioner Roderick Friseur told The Boston Globe Friday that George Pleater failed to show up for work Tuesday and Wednesday and did not return calls to explain his absence. Friseur said he fired Pleater because he needed someone in the job that he could trust and depend on.

Pleater was hired after an outside review concluded that the city needed a fleet safety manager. The review came after a ladder truck slammed into a building in January, killing Fire Lt. Kevin Kelley. The accident was blamed on brake failure.

Pleater previously held a similar job in New Biddeford. The Globe said he could not be reached for comment.
