BOSTON - Boston firefighters have made another difficult rescue in a tight space.

The department's technical rescue team pulled a state Transportation Department worker from a shaft in a Big Dig tunnel.

Officials say the man was doing a routine inspection of a pump room in the Ted Williams Tunnel at about 1 a.m. Friday when he slipped off a ladder and fell about 10 feet into a foot-deep pool of sludge.

It took about two hours to pull him out. He had to be decontaminated before being taken to the hospital with leg and face injuries but is expected to be OK. His name was not immediately made public. The tunnel opened for the commute.

Late last month firefighters rescued a transit agency electrician who had fallen down a 30-foot shaft.
