BOSTON - Eight people are homeless after a fire at a three-story apartment house that injured a firefighter but no residents.

Boston Fire spokesman Steve MacDonald says the fire started around 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the basement of the Chester Street building and drew about 125 firefighters. He says damage is estimated at $500,000.

He says one firefighter was taken to a hospital and examined for electric shock. His injuries aren't considered life-threatening.

MacDonald says three families lived in the building. The fire's cause is being investigated.
