BERGHOLZ, Ohio -- Bergholz Assistant Fire Chief Terry Workman Sr. was killed after suffering a heart attack while driving his truck along Route 22 Wednesday morning.

Workman was a member of the Bergholz Fire Department for over three decades, and NEWS9 talked with firefighters as they remembered their friend, mentor and assistant fire chief.

"He was an outstanding person -- one you could always count on,” said Bergholz Fire Chief John Marsh. “Anytime the department has ever needed something, he was always the first to say, ‘Yes, I'll do that.’"

Marsh said he could have talked about Workman all night. He said there have been many memories, perhaps too many to count.

"Every day was a memorable experience with him. Anybody that worked with him or spent time here with him during any call we ever had was a memorable experience. He was just a wonderful person to be around."

After a truck veered off Route 22 near the Jefferson County-Harrison County border Wednesday morning, one of the Hopedale firefighters at the scene recognized the driver as Workman.

Workman went into cardiac arrest behind the wheel, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol.
