Bedridden Woman, Three Others Rescued From Maine House Fire

LIBERTY, Maine - A Maine fire chief says four people, including a bedridden woman, were rescued from a burning home in the town of Liberty.

Liberty Fire Chief Bill Gillespie says heavy smoke was pouring from the home of Theresa and Benjamin Signor when firefighters arrived about 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Gillespie says an oil delivery man who was passing by, Andrew McLeod, helped him drag Theresa Signor out of the house on her mattress through a sliding glass door.

The chief then returned to help Benjamin Signor and two adult grandchildren.

He says all four were conscious, but coughing.

Theresa Signor activated a panic alarm on a medical alert necklace to call for help.

The Bangor Daily News says the cause of the fire is unknown, but it's not considered suspicious.
